Storm wrestlers finish third against Nebraska competition
by Coach John Hansen
The Burke/Gregory Storm traveled to Ainsworth for the Ainsworth Invitational Tournament on Saturday, January 26, 2018.
This was a fourteen-team invitational tournament in which the champion was Sidney, NE with a score of 236.5 points, followed by, in second place, Valentine, with a score of 196. The Burke/Gregory Storm edged out Central City for fourth place by just a half point, scoring 127.5 points to Central City’s 127. The fifth place finisher was Gordon-Rushville, just one point ahead of the next nearest competitor, that being North Central, by 76-75. That rounds out the top six schools in this fourteen team event.
We did manage to have three of our varsity wrestlers qualify for the finals and won two of those three. We also had one third place finisher and two fourth place finishers. Not quite as much success as we have had in tournaments throughout the season, but in light of the competition we faced, it was a pretty good performance overall.
In the 106-pound class, we picked up one of our championships. Owen Hansen won that one and scored 25 team points. He had a bye in the opening round and then picked up a couple falls in the quarterfinals and semis before winning his championship match by a 11-1 decision over Austin Munier of Sidney.
