Tired of staying indoors? May is Nebraska Bird Month!

Join in Big Bird Weekend Challenge, May 23-25

Help celebrate Nebraska Bird Month by joining the Regional Big Bird Weekend, May 23-25. Wherever you are, you can be part of a community of birders. This year, instead of offering our annual birding hikes and classes, we are challenging people in Brown, Cherry, Keya Paha, and Rock Counties to participate in our Regional Big Bird Weekend Challenge. Get outdoors and discover the world of birds in your own backyard! The person or family in each county that reports the most species of birds will receive a Birder’s Prize Package. Then we will award the Overall Big Bird Weekend Winner.

Birding is particularly exciting in north-central Nebraska because we are a meeting place of western and eastern birds. Western and eastern counterparts like Western Meadowlark and Eastern Meadowlark occur together here. Other examples, include Baltimore and Bullock’s Orioles, Indigo and Lazuli Buntings, and red-shafted and yellow-shafted Northern Flickers. North-central Nebraska has a diversity of bird habitats, from wetlands, to grasslands, to eastern and western forest types. Will you join our Regional Big Bird Weekend to make 2020 the year that we enjoy our bird diversity separately but together?
