Valentine Sale Barn loses 80 hay bales to fire
Sunday, October 11, 2020, began as a warm and sunny day with temperatures in the high 70s that ultimately reached a high of 85. By 1:00 p.m. winds were gusting up to 41 mph with sustained winds in the mid 20 mph range. At approximately 3:00 p.m. the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag warning.
It wasn’t too much longer and a phone call indicated that the Valentine Sale Barn had many hay bales on fire. The block surrounding the Valentine Sale Barn was completely surrounded by grass rigs strategically placed, some near Mistake Lake for quick tank refills and others located south of the cemetery.
Winds were howling - literally - from the north at 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph or thereabouts. Temperatures quickly plummeted from the high of 85 to a chilly, and brisk 50 degrees by 6:00 p.m. and continued to fall to an overnight low into the low 30s.
