Patsy “Pat” VanHouten, 69

Patsy “Pat” Darlene Dummer was born on April 14, 1949 in Burke, SD, to Herman Alfred and Lena Helen (Dvorak) Dummer. She grew up on a farm west of Naper, NE and attended country school K-1st Grade at District #60 and in 2nd grade went to the Naper School until she graduated in 1967. She worked at the Jamison Grocery Store from 1964 until the store closed. In her younger years, Pat enjoyed playing ball, sledding and ice skating.

Pat met Glen Ray VanHouten in school and were married on May 25, 1968, in the Spencer United Methodist Church, where she was also baptized. Pat has been a member of the Springview United Methodist Church since 1984. To this union three children were born - Stacey Darlene, LaVerle Ray and Jodi Kay. But if you asked Pat, she had three sons, LaVerle VanHouten, Rob Painter and Joel Johannesen.

Pat and Glen lived in Butte, NE and Ainsworth, NE and in 1981 they purchased the fertilizer plant in Springview, NE with Glen’s brother Jerry and Barb VanHouten. Pat and Glen made Springview their home. Pat raised her family and was an excellent bookkeeper for their business. She was very proud of her bookkeeping skills and every penny had to be accounted for. When Glen passed away in July 1994, the business was sold. Pat was then a waitress at Flynn’s Cafe for several years, and later worked at the Turbine Mart in Springview until she retired due to illness. No matter where she was working, Pat enjoyed the friendships she gained by serving the community.

During her retirement she enjoyed spending time with her two grandchildren, Tyler Johannesen and Kaylee Johannesen. Her grandkids were the light of her life. Throughout her life, Pat enjoyed reading, Carlock dances, card parties, sneaking into movies, gardening, Facebook and her grand-furbabies.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Lena; husband, Glen; special friend, Jim Flynn; two brothers, DeWane Dummer and Marlin Dummer; brother-in-law, Harold Ulmer; sister-in-law, Janice Dummer; and niece, Wanda Gutierrez.

She is survived by daughters, Stacey (Rob) Painter of Springview, NE and Jodi (Joel) Johannesen of Spearfish, SD; son, LaVerle VanHouten of Chadron, NE; grandchildren, Tyler and Kaylee Johannesen; brothers, Harvey (Kathy) Dummer of Newcastle, WY and Willard Dummer of Butte, NE; sisters, Nola Ulmer of Burke, SD, Dorothy (Jerry) Heerman of Naper, NE, Carol (Dennis) Wentz of St. Paul, NE and Doris Olson of Bridgewater, SD; and sisters-in-law Barbara Dummer of Liberty, MO and Zelda Dummer of Winner, SD.
