Old Settlers take pride in their 132nd annual reunion
Sparks, NE, was a busy place to be on Saturday, August 31, 2019, as area residents celebrated the 132nd annual Old Settlers reunion. There were plenty of horses on the grounds, with pre-school to “senior” riders enjoying the events, and there was something for everyone!
The day started with team roping, then on to horseshoe pitching, a bowery program, small sports and foot races, rodeo, horse races and team sorting.
The bowery program included several readings by host Sally Conner, music with Rick, Kitty and Sadie VanderWey, and recognition of the oldest and youngest in attendance. Otto Frauen, age 96 and his first cousin, Jean Ellis, age 74 of Longmont, CO were oldest man and woman in attendance. Jake Kime, son of Shane and Heather Kime, and Hayley Jones, daughter of J.T. and Amanda Jones were the youngest boy and girl.
Mike Burge and Eve Millar were announcers for the events during the day. Also, many attending wore pink in honor of Patty Frauen Barstow, and others in the fight against breast cancer.
The small sports included foot races for all ages, 3-legged race, slipper kick, and egg toss, and the younger kids spent a lot of time digging thru the sand pile for coins.
