For many farm and ranch families, bringing children or grandchildren into the operation is the ultimate goal. Successfully bringing additional family members into the operation may require some creativity as all parties need to maintain a viable standard of living. This series of articles will highlight ideas and tactics for bringing another family member into the operation. NDA extends restrictions and provides update on HPAI found in livestock

LINCOLN –The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) continues to monitor for the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus in dairy cattle. Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service issued a federal order, that took effect on April 29, mandating testing for interstate movement of lactating dairy cattle as well as mandatory reporting of positive cases. HPAI has been detected in lactating dairy cattle in several states. There have been no reported detections of HPAI in Nebraska dairy cattle or other livestock.

Farm and ranch financial clinics to be held

These clinics are for farmers and ranchers and their families. They are confidential, one-on-one sessions with an experienced Ag Law attorney and Ag finance counselor. These clinics have been offered in Nebraska since 1989. In a roughly hour-long session, you are welcome to bring up whatever issues might be affecting your farm or ranch. In general, clinic discussions often involve estate and succession planning, financial and operational issues, beginning farmer programs, real estate and lease matters, fence law, property rights, farm loans and loan programs, and debtor/ creditor law. Here is an opportunity to obtain an experienced outside opinion on issues that may be affecting your farm or ranch. Bring your questions!

Governor Pillen proclaims May as Renewable Fuels Month in Nebraska

Lincoln- Governor Jim Pillen has once again demonstrated his commitment to sustainable energy by designating the month of May as Renewable Fuels Month in Nebraska. This proclamation, made during a ceremony at the State Capitol today, underscores the pivotal role that renewable fuels play in the state's economy, environment and energy security.

Nebraska: Helping its own after tornadoes

ELKHORN--Church organizations and volunteers are coming together in the thousands to support the families in Elkhorn after a tornado tore through residential areas on April 26, 2024. Through packed streets and piles of rubble—trucks hauling trailers of trees, people walking with chainsaws, hammering tarps on open roofs, packing valuables into clear plastic tubs, cleaning up debris, handing out food and water—the community in the surrounding area pulled together to help everyone.

Remembering Nebraska’s Indigenous who have gone missing or were murdered

Lincoln -- Attorney General Hilgers and Grace Johnson, Nebraska’s Liaison for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) are sharing an important message after May 5, which is the National Awareness Day for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons. Grace Johnson began serving as Liaison as a member of the Attorney General’s Office in October 2023. She is an enrolled member of the Oglala-Lakota Sioux tribe.

VPD reported offenses, citations, and arrests, April 21-27

Incidents/Arrests On 04/21/2024 at 4:34 p.m., an officer responded to the 700 block of East Highway 20 for a hit and run accident resulting in property damage. An 18 year old Valentine man was cited for leaving the scene of an accident.

Legislative round-up: April 18, final day

LINCOLN--Nebraska lawmakers passed six bills and five appropriation bills before hearing from Gov. Jim Pillen on the last day of this year’s Legislative session, April 18, 2024. A Pillen-backed property tax relief bill that lawmakers did not pass will likely bring them back for a special session in the coming months.
