Bird flu costs pile up as outbreak enters second year

OMAHA, (AP)-The ongoing bird flu outbreak has cost the government roughly $661 million and added to consumers’ pain at the grocery store after more than 58 million birds were slaughtered to limit the spread of the virus.

Snow. Same song, sixth or seventh verse . . . I’ve lost count! The area received about 8 inches again over the weekend, with some wind, which means some roads drifted shut again. St. Francis has reported 27” for the month of January, and Valentine 28”. Total snowfall in Valentine since December 1 is 50.6”. As I write this Monday morning, it was -14 in St. Francis and Valentine.

Sand Painter Artist of the Month

February 2023 Artist of the Month for the Sand Painters Art Guild is Kelly Keogh. Photography has been a passion since she was a child. She received her first kodak camera when she was only nine years old. Her love for taking photographs was passed down from her Maternal Grandfather. She has been sharing her photos beyond family and friends for past four years since she became a member of the Sand Painters Art Guild She grew up in the Norden, NE area. She is a High School Graduate of Keya Paha County. She enlisted in the US Navy in 2007 and Honorably Discharged in June 2015. She served as a Culinary Specialist. Photos are on display at Viaero and four banks in Valentine.

Highway Safety Coalition urges Unicameral to keep current helmet law

Lincoln-On Monday, January 23, 2023, a coalition of organizations announced strong opposition to a legislative proposal that would substantially weaken Nebraska’s motorcycle helmet law, and therefore increase the number of deaths and traumatic injuries on the state’s highways.

NWS North Platte severe weather spotter course schedule

The National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Office in North Platte, in coordination with county emergency management, volunteer fire departments and other local community organizations, will offer free severe weather storm spotter training throughout the spring months of 2023. The spotter training is offered at several locations across western and north central Nebraska and is open to anyone who has an interest in severe weather.

The Valentine Vets Club held their fourth week soup contest. First place winner was Rachel Wade, with sausage tortellini; second place jambalaya was Billy Weller, not pictured due to snow; third place was Emma Hanson with Italian soup; Bruce Balerud made potato soup.

Jean Burge Dean and Sheryl Noteboom enjoyed a visit last weekend from Mindy and Jason Veurink and family and got in some fishing and sledding. Sheryl visited the Veurinks at Platte this past weekend.
