June 19 is celebrated as “Juneteenth,” in honor of one of the final acts of emancipation of slaves in the U.S. This year, June 19 falls on a Sunday, so the federal holiday – established in 2021 by President Joe Biden – will be observed on Monday, June 20.

This month of awareness promotes talking to those affected and encouraging more research to find a cure.

Raising awareness of men’s health in June

Lincoln – Celebrated each year during June, Men’s Health Month brings awareness to health issues that men face. Since 1992, this annual observance offers encouragement for men, boys, and their families to take control of their health.

Blood drive held in Winner, SD

Recently, LifeServe Blood Center held their first blood drive in Winner, SD, which was hosted by the Southern Belle Cattlewomen. The blood drive was held at the Tripp County Building, where 99 people donated blood and 104 units were collected.

Lakeview/Crookston

Gary and Barb Peters spent several weeks in Michigan visiting family and friends. They attended the graduation and open house for grandson Colton Peters, a bridal shower for a grandson’s brideto-be, Sarah, and a memorial for Barb’s aunt, Alma Post, who was 100. Alma, who was a Verduin, was born and grew up in the Lakeview area.

Mental health services for Cherry County residents

The Community Services Program at Northwest Community Action Partnership (NCAP) is now offering up to $500.00 in financial assistance for individuals experiencing mental health issues. Eligible services include: • Mental health or substance abuse assessments.

As the weather and seasons change so do the types of calls to the Nebraska Regional Poison Center. During the summer months, poison centers manage more calls about bites, stings, plants, and pesticides than other times of the year.
