SNAP benefits paused in November due to Federal shutdown

Lincoln, NE – The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), at the direction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), paused Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on October 29 due to the federal government shutdown. USDA has notified the state that federally funded SNAP benefits for November will be delayed if the shutdown continues into next month.

Craig Beman had never doodled, drawn, or dabbled in paint before turning 46. But that turned out to be a big year for new beginnings for the former entrepreneur. A little over a month after he and his wife, Peggy, decided to begin a full-time ministry, he picked up a pencil and started sketching. When his wife saw the sophisticated results of his novice efforts, she encouraged him to nurture what they both immediately recognized as his God-given talent.

Art Exhibition inspired by Willa Cather

The Sand Painters Art Club and Valentine Public Library are co-hosting Impact: Willa Cather, an art exhibition from Impact Nebraska Artists. The show includes 25 pieces by Nebraska artists, inspired from the writings of Willa Cather (1873-1947), a Pulitzer Prize winning Nebraska author. The show can be viewed at the Valentine Public Library from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, throughout November.

Reverse Raffle Winners

Fun, food, and winners were all things the community enjoyed at the Valentine Volunteer Fire Department reverse raffle. It was a fund-raising event that was held on October 11 at the old Shopko building to raise funds for the benefit of the Cherry County Event Center.

WMA to be renamed for Bassett native, Lyman

Bassett native Nick Lyman will be memorialized when the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission renames the Twin Lakes R.C. Wildlife Management Area in his honor.

The community extends sympathy to Janet and Duane Cady and family. Janet’s mother, Darlene Thomas, passed away October 20 in North Platte at age 89. Funeral service was held Monday at the Methodist Church in Valentine.
