Leo Brinda Post and Unit 90, and Sons Squadron of the American Legion in Valentine will sponsor their annual Fill An Empty Stocking project. Parents and/or legal guardians with physical custody who wish to sign up their children for gifts need to fill out the forms at Union Bank and Trust on Highway 20, in Valentine on or before Friday, December 5.

Nebraska, October 13, 2025— Volunteers are preparing to collect Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts during National Collection Week, November 17-24. Nearly 5,000 drop-off locations will open across the country in November, and shoebox packers can find their local drop-off locations in Nebraska.

It’s happening, assets are being shared and those in need are receiving the help they desperately need. This isn’t some far away mission, not some third world country. It’s right here in Valentine, where ordinary people are doing extraordinary things to meet the needs of our community. This is only the beginning of what we can accomplish together.

The heart of agriculture was on full display as Valentine hosted the District 9 Fall CDE (Career Development Event) Livestock Judging Contest, welcoming more than 350 FFA members from 20 schools across the district. Representing students from grades seven through 12 in Agronomy along with Farm and Agribusiness Management events.

One of the many blessings I have received during my lifetime was by having two wonderful parents and was raised with what would be viewed as a model home life. My mother was a stay-at-home mom (as were most during my youth) and known far and wide as an excellent cook. She was raised during the great depression, worked like a slave girl from a very young age, and unable to attend high school because of finances and her labor being needed at the farm where she was raised.

Lavern and Pauline Lanz traveled to Minneapolis to attend the fund raiser, Hog Roast and Sauce contest to Cure Brain Cancer, organized by Derek and Andrea Lanz. Darby Lanz flew in from Las Vegas, and Pauline’s sister, Marlene of Rapid City attended also. Reports are the pork was delicious as well as Darby’s cupcakes!

Halloween is an exciting holiday for children. The staff at the Poison Center would like to remind parents and caregivers to take some simple precautions to make sure that everyone has a safe and happy Halloween.

Every year on October 15, Global Handwashing Day serves as an important reminderof howsomething as simple as washing our hands can make a big difference in keeping ourselves, our families, and our communities healthy.

During the week of October 5 - 11, the following arrest was reported by the Valentine Police Department: • On October 10 at 1:24 a.m., a traffic stop lead to the arrest of a 52 year old Nebraska woman for the offense of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol. During the week the police department responded to 40 calls for service, including: • 20 traffic stops • 4 reports of suspicious person or vehicle • 2 animal complaints • 1 harassment complaint • 1 criminal mischief.
