The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission certified six state fishing records in 2021, including the underwater spearfishing channel catfish mark that was broken twice in eight days. It was a record that had stood for more than 20 years.

Cherry County 4-H youth participated in the Nebraska 4-H State Outdoor and Indoor Archery competitions this fall and winter. The Outdoor Championship was held in September at Grand Island. Ayden Naslund received fourth in Youth Bowhunter Freestyle Targets. Dylan Naslund received first in Young Adult Bowhunter Freestyle 3-D and second in Bowhunter Freestyle Targets (tiebreaker by 1 X). Jenalee Garwood received fourth in Youth Basic 3-D and third in Youth Basic Targets. Jaeden Garwood received third in Cub Freestyle 3-D and fourth in Cub Freestyle Targets. Also competing from Cherry County was Tanner Olson.

The 2022 Cork Thornton Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament was held Saturday, January 29, with high temperatures reaching 57 degrees. The overnight low was a chilly 17 degrees.

The Lady Badgers hosted Stuart Broncos Thursday, January 20, 2022 and won with a score of 45-39. Scoring by quarters: Valentine - 13, 6, 15, 11 = 45 Stuart - 11, 7, 7, 14 = 39 Lead scorer was Kailee Kellum with 15, followed by Kinsey Buechle with 9, and Jayda From with 8.

Leo Brinda American Legion Auxiliary Unit 90 is sponsoring a junior girl to attend Cornhusker Girls State in Lincoln. An informational meeting will be held February 3, 2022, at 3:30 p.m.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission adopted special area regulation changes for wildlife management areas at its meeting January 28, 2022 in Lincoln. The changes concern hunting at Gifford Point WMA in Sarpy County.

Five students from Valentine High School were selected to participate in the UNK Music Festival in Kearney. Students who were accepted into the choirs included: Cassius Browning in Honor Choir, Nathan Perrett in Festival Choir, and Grace Maunu in Treble Choir.

Valentine High School second semester Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held in the commons area Wednesday, February 9, 2022, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. There will be no classes held February 9, due to the conferences.

Our Badgers have had a tough losing streak and the past week was no different. Thursday, January 20, 2022, they hosted Stuart Broncos and lost with a score of 31-52.
