Registration is open for the annual Healthy Farms Conference

Lincoln, January 2, 2024 — Registration is open for the 2024 Local Food and Healthy Farms Conference, which takes place January 2527 at the River’s Edge Conference Center in Columbus. For over 40 years, the Nebraska Sustainable Ag Society’s (NSAS) annual conference has been a mainstay event for farmers to connect and share knowledge.

Unraveling medical myths

Myths are just stories we tell ourselves and others to make sense of the world around us. Myths convey beliefs or values and attempt to tell truths. In their effort to tell the truth, myths may exaggerate or misrepresent things. Sometimes this misrepresentation is innocent, while other times it is used as a tool to regulate or manipulate people. Myths can be used to give a sense of power and control over an overwhelming situation.

Caring for plants by overwintering indoors

Gardeners are notorious for pushing the limits of their growing zones. Tropical plants, succulents, and other plants that are not hardy to the winter climate often end up indoors for the winter. It usually starts with one or two plants that you just can’t part with or are concerned you won’t be able to purchase next year. Since you are taking a couple of plants in for the winter, why not add a few more?

The Walkling family enjoyed their yearly family getaway to the Black Hills this past weekend. Vern and Marlys were joined by the Matt and Dakota Walkling families, Heidi and Jimmy Doyle and family, and Prairey and Jamie Brennan and family and all enjoyed hiking, fishing, biking, games, a bison auction and great fire conversations!

Bloodless joints?

Perspectives How much blood flows through your joints? Would you be surprised if I told you, “none”? That’s right! Inside the joint there is a clear, viscous, slippery fluid that lubricates the joint surface, but no red blood flows inside the joint. Doctors do not want to see blood in a joint.

The holiday season is fast approaching, and we are all looking for unique and affordable gifts for friends, teachers and others who have impacted our lives this past year. Many social media sites have been featuring some wonderful ideas; though many of these ideas look attractive and are unique for gift giving, one needs to ask is it safe to consume and/or is it shelf stable.

Plant a few trees for you and the bees

Fall is a great time to add trees to your landscape. Not only do they provide shade, remove pollutants from the air, and help manage stormwater; but many also provide food for bees. Keep this in mind when selecting and planting new trees in your yard now and in the future.

Take action to stop bullying in your community

Lincoln - Bullying can affect a child’s school experience, performance, mental health, and even behavior at home. During the month of October, Nebraskans are encouraged to educate themselves on the signs and harmful effects that these actions can have on the children who experience bullying.

Exercise for healthier aging

We all know that exercise is great for our overall health. Exercise is important for our cardiovascular health of course, which is why the American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every week. No less importantly, and especially as we get older, another huge benefit of exercise is in fall and injury prevention.
