Child Passenger Safety Week is September 18-24

Parents and caregivers have a lot on their plates, including making sure every child is safe while in a vehicle. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Region 7, which includes Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska, is announcing its annual Child Passenger Safety Week, September 18-24, 2022. The week is dedicated to educating parents and caregivers about the importance of correctly choosing, installing, and using car seats, booster seats, and seat belts to ensure their child is safe while in a motor vehicle.

Farm and ranch financial clinics to be held

These clinics are for farmers and ranchers and their families. They are confidential, one-on-one sessions with an experienced ag law attorney and ag finance counselor. These clinics have been offered in Nebraska since 1989.

Jean Burge Ron and Becky Patton flew to Tok, AK where they spent two weeks visiting their daughter, Heather and Rob Deeter. They had a great time seeing the sights, including going along for a caribou and moose hunt, which was not successful, but sure enjoyed harvesting blueberries, rose hips and even a few cranberries.

West Nile Virus positive mosquito pool found in Holt County

The North Central District Health Department would like to report that West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Holt County near O’Neill. Residents should take precautions to protect themselves from mosquitoes.

Winning perennials for your garden

After a busy summer of vacations, BBQ’s, and garden care, it is fun to turn our attention to planting. Fall is a great time to plant perennials and many garden centers are busy refreshing their supply of perennial plants. Consider including one or more of these winners when making your perennial plant selections this fall.

Our Savior Lutheran Church to host mission speaker

Our Savior Lutheran Church in Valentine invites you to attend our special mission event on Sunday, September 4. We will be welcoming mission speaker Gary W. Thies, who is a Mission Development Counselor with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Gary will give an exciting and interesting presentation on what is happening in the mission field around the world. Be sure to invite someone to come with you because you, too, are a missionary!

Jean Burge School is in session at Lakeview with a full staff! They started the year with 34 students. Teachers are Kayla Walkling, Dakota Walkling and Jennifer Schubauer.

DHHS warns of social services block grant scam targeting Nebraskans

Lincoln-The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Children and Family Services (CFS) has been made aware of a scam targeting Nebraskans that involves Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) funds. The scam involves a scammer calling a person claiming that they won a Social Services Block Grant award yet must pay a transaction fee to receive the award. The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) outlined the details of this scam in this public notice to states and territories.
