As the weather and seasons change so do the types of calls to the Nebraska Regional Poison Center. During the summer months, poison centers manage more calls about bites, stings, plants, and pesticides than other times of the year.

The Label is the Law You might not be handcuffed but you could face a hefty fine! When using any chemical the label is the law. Using a chemical in a manner that does not comply with the label is illegal.

Lincoln-Swimming and other water activities are a fun part of summer in Nebraska. From May 23 to May 29, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recognizes Healthy and Safe Swimming Week. The week aims to give Nebraskans the information they need to maximize the health benefits of swimming and other water-based activities while minimizing the risk of illness and injury.

OMAHA-This year’s class of college graduates are getting ready to start their new lives! It’s a big transition that includes several important changes. Grads may be moving to a new city, finding a new place to live, or searching for a new job. Graduation also often means new financial responsibilities, such as starting payments on student loans.

When to plant, temperature It is tempting to start planting when warm weather first arrives but planting too early can be a mistake. Consider the type of plant, the last average frost date, which can be as late as May 31 and the current soil temperature. You can use an inexpensive soil thermometer or check the soil temp at cropwatch. unl.edu/soiltemperature. The soil temperature should be 60 degrees or more for warm-weather plants like tomatoes, peppers, basil and most flowering plants.

The University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Office in Cherry County is excited to announce summer events that are open to all youth, regardless of 4-H enrollment. 4-H is the biggest positive youth development program in the nation, empowering young people ages five through 18 to develop life skills and find their “spark” for hobbies and careers. Enrollment for 2022 Fair participation is open until June 15, but youth can get involved any time of year. To enroll, go to v2.4honline.com. Lincoln-Wild bees and other pollinators play a crucial role in pollinating fruits, vegetables, grains, and flowers that are essential to both human agriculture and wild ecosystems. Nebraska Public Media, Nebraska Game and Parks, Nebraska Statewide Arboretum and Nebraska Extension Bee Lab, are community partners in Celebrating Nebraska Pollinators, a project designed to highlight the challenges pollinators are facing from habitat and food supply decline, pesticides and more.

Marlys Walkling, Heidi Doyle and Prairey Brennen flew to San Diego, CA where they attended the wedding of Marlys’ nephew, returning home Sunday. A memorial service for Larry Gene Hutchison, 69, was held Saturday, May 21 in Torrington, WY.
