When the sky breaks open: Watching thunderstorms roll through the Sandhills

Somewhere along the spine of Highway 12, just east of Valentine, Nebraska, the land stretches wide and quiet like it’s holding its breath. Out here in the Sandhills, there’s a particular kind of silence—the kind that lets you hear the first tremble of thunder hours before the rain arrives. It was that silence I chased on a July afternoon, pulling over at the Fort Niobrara Overlook, camera in hand and eyes on the horizon.

Minnechaduza Creek Bridge on Highway 12 is OPEN for traffic, April 23!

Minnechaduza Creek Bridge Structure Number. S012 00398 STP-12-2(106) CN 80944 ID 80944 Progress Report: Day 228 of 263 On Highway 12, 3 miles east of Valentine, work to replace the bridge over the Minnechaduza Creek is nearing completion. Work to build the roadway to the bridge is underway and will be complete soon. All remaining work, grading, guardrail, and drainage structures is to be completed under traffic control for work zones.

Seniors volunteer at the VES After School Program

The After School Program at the Valentine Elementary School allows students to stay until around 5:30 p.m., if their parents are busy. Some of my classmates and I have begun volunteering for this program for our community service project.

2025 Communications and Expressive Arts Contest results

The 4-H Communications and Expressive Arts Contest was held on March 28th at the Fairgrounds. There were 17 participants competing in the different areas of speech, music, and talent. The judge for the music and talent portion was Chelsea Luthy-Stoeger while Noah and Hannah Barber judged the public speaking.
