Spring has finally found its way here! Hoping everyone had a blessed Easter A massive crowd packed into the Merriman Dance Hall to say goodbye to Loretta Fish of Cody. She was at Security First Bank in Merriman for many years and was ever so loved in the Merriman-Cody communities.

LINCOLN, NE – , Governor Jim Pillen signed a letter of intent to Secretary Brooke Rollins of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), notifying her of Nebraska’s intent to pursue a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) waiver, removing soda and energy drinks from SNAP allowable purchases. Nebraska is the second state to submit such a waiver.

Chloe Coplen-Anderson, of Gordon, NE, was sentenced by Judge Travis O’Gorman to 35 to 60 years in prison for the murder of her newborn baby. Coplen-Anderson pled guilty to one count of second degree murder last August in Sheridan County District Court.

Court News During the week of April 20 - 26, the following arrests were made: • On April 21 at 9:05 p.m., officers responded to an assault call in the 200 block of North Hall Street. A 44 year old Nebraska man was later arrested and jailed for the offense of Assault in the Third Degree.

Somewhere along the spine of Highway 12, just east of Valentine, Nebraska, the land stretches wide and quiet like it’s holding its breath. Out here in the Sandhills, there’s a particular kind of silence—the kind that lets you hear the first tremble of thunder hours before the rain arrives. It was that silence I chased on a July afternoon, pulling over at the Fort Niobrara Overlook, camera in hand and eyes on the horizon.

S012 00398 STP-12-2(106) CN 80944 ID 80944 Progress Report: Day 228 of 263 On Highway 12, 3 miles east of Valentine, work to replace the bridge over the Minnechaduza Creek is nearing completion. Work to build the roadway to the bridge is underway and will be complete soon. All remaining work, grading, guardrail, and drainage structures is to be completed under traffic control for work zones.

VALENTINE, Nebraska (April 11, 2025) — A sufficient blood supply is important to ensure patient needs are met. Donors of all blood types are encouraged to donate blood on May 1, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at St. Nicholas Catholic Church to help save lives.

The After School Program at the Valentine Elementary School allows students to stay until around 5:30 p.m., if their parents are busy. Some of my classmates and I have begun volunteering for this program for our community service project.

The 4-H Communications and Expressive Arts Contest was held on March 28th at the Fairgrounds. There were 17 participants competing in the different areas of speech, music, and talent. The judge for the music and talent portion was Chelsea Luthy-Stoeger while Noah and Hannah Barber judged the public speaking.
