Walt and Sonja Lurz were treated to five days in Deadwood by their children, Tiffany and Trav Howe, and Terry and Amanda Lurz, to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, which was January 21. On Sunday they all met in Spearfish to celebrate a dedication at church for their great granddaughter, Naomi Lea Lurz, who is seven weeks old. She is the daughter of Walt and Sonja’s grandson, Connor Lurz and wife Emma, who came from Oklahoma for the special occasion. Happy anniversary Walt and Sonja!

Public Participation and Engagement Course focuses on rural economic development

LINCOLN, NE, January 23 —The University of Nebraska’s Department of Agricultural Economics, in partnership with Rural Prosperity Nebraska, announces its online, non-credit course Public Participation and Engagement for the third semester running, beginning February 15. With the course open to the public, the curriculum focuses on helping community leaders and those involved in their communities enhance their work and locally-focused projects through public engagement planning knowledge and skills.

Community Development Assistance act opportunity through DED is accepting applications

The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) is now accepting applications for the Community Development Assistance Act (CDAA) opportunity. The CDAA enables DED to distribute a 40 percent state tax credit to individuals and business firms that make eligible contributions to certified projects or programs.

During the week of January 18-26, the following arrests were made by the Valentine Police Department: • On January 18, at about 3:35 a.m., officers responded to a disturbance complaint in the 100 block of North Wood Street. A 26 year old Nebraska man and a 24 year old Nebraska woman were both arrested for Third Degree Assault and transported to the Cherry County Jail.

Veterans!!!

I just wanted to reach out and let you all know about a program called Project Share Your Story. It is a project by the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation to collect stories from Vietnam Era Veterans and share those stories.

Second round Vets Club Soup Contest results

On a very windy and cold night the second preliminary round Vets Club soup contest had five fantastic soups! Winning the round was Amanda Gordon, not pictured, with her roasted white chicken chili. In second place with her lasagna soup was Christi Streat, far left, just edging out Sydney Dexter’s sausage and pablano. Brandon Parrone, far right, made a zesty cheesy chicken and Tom Lancaster made green chili with pork for this round which was sponsored by Tony’s Tire. Round three will be January 23, 2026.
