River Rock was the entertainment for VAAC

Sunday, January 17 was brisk - to say the least. Cold winds and some frozen precipitation on the ground, but that couldn’t keep the warmth at bay, with the entertainment from River Rock. Local members include: R.J. Luthy on drums, Steve Steele on electric guitar, Mike Sybrant on bass, and Mark Stoeger on electric guitar and vocals. Stoeger said their singer, Dave Bachelor, wasn’t able to make it due to illness - our prayers for a quick recovery - he didn’t want to pass around his germs.

Nebraska FFA Alumni & Supporters hold 2026 conference in Valentine

On a “squall ~ weather kind of day,” the Nebraska FFA Alumni & Supporters gathered in Valentine for their 2026 Conference. Each year in late January, the group visits agriculture based communities across the state for its annual convention and business meeting. Because the host location rotates annually, members are able to experience a wide variety of Nebraska communities and industries.

Surveillance detects 197 positive CWD cases in deer

Chronic wasting disease surveillance conducted in southwestern Nebraska during the November and December deer seasons detected 197 positive cases in deer. In the Buffalo, Republican, Platte, and Frenchman management units 785 samples were collected for testing.

Winter at Fort Niobrara

The long-awaited day arrived at last, and Fort Niobrara welcomed Christmas with warmth, laughter, and the joy of community. Soldiers, townsfolk from Valentine, and children of all ages gathered together to celebrate, marking a season of generosity, friendship, and holiday spirit.

From my Window How the term, old wives’ tales got named is a mystery in itself, but we all have been subjected to the fallacies generated by these expressions. Supposedly, old wives’ tales are a type o f urban legend said to be passed down by older women to a younger generation, however, I am certain that older men played a part in spreading the fables.

We had a taste of winter weather over the weekend. A little snow, high winds, and just plain blustery. With subzero temperatures, the ice fishermen are still holding out hope for ice. It was a good weekend to hunker down – read a book, bake some bread, or take a nap. (Unless you have livestock!)

Valentine extends partnership with Heartland Energy

Heartland Energy will continue providing electric service to the city of Valentine, NE, strengthening a partnership that began eight years ago when the city first sought a new power supplier. Since then, Heartland has supported Valentine with reliable service and an array of programs to support community growth and prosperity.

Submit feedback on improving community-based behavioral health services

Lincoln, NE – The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services(DHHS)extendedthetimeline for providers and the public to submit feedback on the Behavioral Health Service Definitions for Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders. DHHS is also receiving feedback on the Mental Health, Substance Use Disorder, and Applied Behavior Analysis Provider Manual. The public comment period for both has been extended to January 31, 2026.
