The new year is upon us, and it’s time to celebrate! For most folks, it’s the time of year that we spend reflecting on the good, the bad, and the ugly from the previous year, and we prepare to “knock the New Year out of the park!” Have you ever wondered how Nebraska conservation officers celebrate the New Year? I’m sure you have visions of officers sitting on a hill overlooking the valley pondering life. Better yet, maybe you think we channel our inner Lorax and bring cake made of acorns to the critters of the wild while stating “unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.

Taking preventive actions against EBT fraud

Lincoln, NE – In the wake of multiple cases of Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) fraud in Nebraska this week, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is reminding those with EBT cards to take preventive measures to protect their benefits.

During the week of December 28 through January 3, the following arrests were reported by the Valentine Police Department; • December 31, at 10:05 p.m., a traffic stop near the intersection of 4th and Edna Streets lead to the arrest of a 32 year old Pennsylvania man on the charge of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol. • December 31st, at 10:20 p.m., a traffic stop in the 200 block of North Main Street lead to the arrest of a 48 year old Nebraska man on the charge of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.

Heart City Childcare opens its doors

The Valentine Children & Families Coalition (VCFC) recently celebrated the grand opening of Heart City Childcare, marking the completion of a two-year project dedicated to addressing the growing need for childcare in Valentine. The new facility officially opened on January 5, 2026.

Local graduate claims Junior World Strongman title

Broden Westover, a graduate of Valentine High School, has earned a World Championship title at the Official Strongman Games Junior World Finals, establishing himself as the strongest person under 21 in his weight class.

Hearts in Wonderland theme of 82nd annual Coronation

The 82nd Coronation Hearts in Wonderland is set to crown its royalty on Sunday, February 1, at at 5:30 p.m., at Valentine High School. Royalty candidates and participants have been chosen from the Valentine Community Schools K-12th grade.
