Be mindful of heart health risks during hunting season

The American Heart Association says hunting safety should include awareness of warning signs of heart attack and stroke, importance of learning Hands-only CPR and how to take action The thrill of bagging a big buck can bring a smile to any hunter’s face. But the exertion of dragging that trophy back to camp could bring on a heart attack or stroke, according to the American Heart Association. In rural settings where EMS responses can be delayed and minutes matter, it’s important for hunters to be ready to respond in a cardiac or stroke emergency.

Grant funding awarded to area schools for college visits

Lincoln, NE - EducationQuest Foundation has awarded 86 Nebraska schools with 8th-Grade Campus Visit Grants totaling nearly $56,000. Schools will use grant funds of up to $1,350 to support college visits and related activities that enhance student preparation for college throughout the 2025-26 academic year.

West 4th Street Construction update

The construction project on West 4th Street (HWY 83 North) is nearing completion. Placement of the concrete roadway and sidewalks is complete.

Friends of the Niobrara receive $50,000 grant from the National Park Foundation

Leo Brinda Post and Unit 90, and Sons Squadron of the American Legion in Valentine will sponsor their annual Fill An Empty Stocking project. Parents and/or legal guardians with physical custody who wish to sign up their children for gifts need to fill out the forms at Union Bank and Trust on Highway 20, in Valentine on or before Friday, December 5.

Operation Christmas Child is ready for National Collection Week, November 17-24

Nebraska, October 13, 2025— Volunteers are preparing to collect Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts during National Collection Week, November 17-24. Nearly 5,000 drop-off locations will open across the country in November, and shoebox packers can find their local drop-off locations in Nebraska.

District 9 FFA students gather in Valentine for Fall CDE Contest

The heart of agriculture was on full display as Valentine hosted the District 9 Fall CDE (Career Development Event) Livestock Judging Contest, welcoming more than 350 FFA members from 20 schools across the district. Representing students from grades seven through 12 in Agronomy along with Farm and Agribusiness Management events.
