Pastures and hay meadows provide higher quality feed, are more productive, and require fewer inputs when they have good forage legumes growing in them. Outside of moisture, nitrogen is often the limiting nutrient in pasture production.

Cheatgrass, sometimes called downy brome, or wild oats, is an annual weedy grass that can be a problem in pastures, particularly in central and western Nebraska. Cheatgrass often invades thin or overgrazed pastures in fall and early spring.

NCTA students had the opportunity to sharpen their horsemanship, roping and livestock-handling skills during a two-day Ranch Roping and Stockmanship Clinic led by Ryan Sexson of Nenzel, NE. Lavern and Pauline Lanz went to Hartford, SD last week for the funeral of their niece, Nicole Herman. They traveled on to Minneapolis to attended their grandson’s football games. On Saturday afternoon Derek and Andrea Lanz organized the Pigtober Hog Roast and Sauce Contest to raise money to defeat brain cancer. Derek and Andrea have been instrumental in organizing these fund raisers in honor and memory of Caleb Lanz for a number of years.
