Swiss IFYI agricultural experience

Hoi (Hello), from Switzerland! I have had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the country's dairy industry after moving to my 3rd host family that live in yet a different canton of Switzerland, Zurich. Brown Swiss cattle are the breed of choice on this Swiss dairy, allowing me to experience a hands on and unique approach to this country’s dairy industry.

Hunters ages 12 through 29 must have proof on their person of the completion of: • Firearm Hunter Education while hunting any game with a firearm or air gun. • Bowhunter Education while hunting deer, antelope, elk or bighorn sheep with a bow or crossbow.

Common mullein control

Common mullein is an invasive biennial weed that can spread rapidly into pastures. First year seeds prefer to germinate and form rosette plants in disturbed or tilled soils. Then, second year mullein plants enter the bolting stage, developing yellow flowering seed head spikes. Due to recent mild winters, mullein winter survival has been high.

The cost of overgrazing

There is a saying “take half and leave half” with regard to grazing. However, with the weather events this past year, some producers are concerned about long-term overgrazing since this can reduce grass production and profits for years. Overgrazing often leads to higher feed costs, lower carrying capacity, and more expensive pasture recovery over time.

Duane and Janet Cady drove to Eaton, CO to visit Erma Thas and her daughters, Laura and Steve Ehrlich, Lana and Brian Smallwood, and Zanette Grubbs on Thursday, July 30. On Friday they drove to BonCarbo to visit Sharon Cady. Her son, Dave Cady from Fort Collins joined them. They returned home Monday.

Keep plants protected and hydrated on sunny days

Plants will send you signals when they need a drink. Look for wilting, curling brown leaves, dry soil, or slowed growth. As indicators that plants need more water. Adjust watering frequency based on your soil type. Sandy soils drain faster and may need deep daily water, while clay soils retain moisture longer and can go 2 to 3 days between waterings. Any soil amendments needed are best applied at the beginning of your gardening season.

Nebraska cyclosporiasis cases linked to national outbreak

Lincoln, NE – The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has just been notified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that 92 Nebraska cyclosporiasis cases have been linked to an ongoing multistate outbreak. Nebraska currently has 218 confirmed cases. 191 cases were acquired in thThe CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and public health officials nationwide are investigating a potential link to iceberg lettuce. On July 17, Taylor Farms recalled certain iceberg lettuce products sourced from Central Mexico. The CDC advises consumers not to eat recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. Anyone who still has the recalled products should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
