Walt and Sonja Lurz were in the Black Hills over the weekend where they attended the graduations of two grandsons. Jordan Howe’s graduation was at Mt. Rushmore Sunday morning. He is the son of Travis and Tiffany (Lurz) Howe. Connor Lurz, son of Terry and Amanda Lurz graduated at Sturgis Sunday afternoon. Congratulations to the young men and their families!

As Memorial Day fast approaches, NFPA offers grilling safety tips to help reduce fires

May 18, 2023 – Often considered the unofficial kick-off to summer, Memorial Day weekend is synonymous with outdoor celebrations and cookouts. With the holiday just around the corner and the warmer months upon us, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is working to ensure that people understand where potential grilling risks exist and ways to minimize them.

LOGOS Boost training to be held May 24

The Valentine Presbyterian church is sponsoring LOGOS Boost training on May 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. We are asking for as many church members and friends of the church as possible to take the training. If you know of others who are not part of our church but interested or actively participating in LOGOS in Valentine, please pass along this information to them.

VMS students plant pines on Park Hill with MNNRD

The Valentine Middle School’s seventh grade class planted 500 ponderosa pines on Park Hill, Thursday, May 11, 2023. The pines were two years old, and with the help of Middle Niobrara NRD staff, they were covered with mulch to help retain water.

Planting Valentine’s Main Street, May 12

The Main Street project has been completed, ahead of schedule, and the final portion was to plant in the bumpouts on Main, which took place Friday, May 12, 2023. Volunteers were busy early in the day planting trees including: sand cherry, paper birch, and low sumac; along with native growing plants: cat mint, little blue stem Nebraska State grass.

Austin Ahrens shared information on why the benches need to be facing away from the street: 1. Main Street is a U.S. Highway – these types of roads are designed to try to separate pedestrians from traffic as much as possible. Facing the street encourages crossing from one side to the other in those locations. This is the main reason from an engineering and DOT perspective these benches face toward buildings.

Valentine Badgers Compete at 2023 NSAA State Track Meet

Four members of the Valentine Badger Boys Track Team traveled to Omaha on May 19-20, to compete in the 2023 NSAA State Track Meet. Jack Lancaster competed in the Class C Boys 1600 Meter Run for the third time and finished in 17th place with a time of 4:44.86.

Conference focuses on entrepreneurial development in Nebraska communities

Lincoln, May 19, 2023—Valentine will show off its newly renovated Main Street when community leaders and business professionals come to the city to attend the fifth annual Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities (CEC) Conference June 8-9. Hosted by Rural Prosperity Nebraska in a different community each year, the two-day event features workshops, seminars, and keynote lectures focused on all things community development, from entrepreneurial environments to tourism enhancement.
