Mini but very merry: Holiday villages a flexible tradition

Whether in cardboard, wood or porcelain, little villages _ with houses, shops, miniature figures and snowy fir trees _ have long been part of many families' holiday decorating tradition. They're also popular now as part of an ongoing love of the cozy and the do-it-yourself.

5 plants that say ‘holiday season,’ and how to care for them

Holiday horticulture tends to revolve around the same handful of plants. So if you don’t already have any or all of these five holiday plants, now is the time to get them: PAPERWHITES The bulbs of these daffodil family members are pre-chilled so they can be planted now and produce flowers in a month to six weeks. If you find them for sale, by all means buy as many as you can. The only caveat is that some family members may object to the unbelievably sweet smell of their blooms.

A Different sort of Greeting!

Why is it that people have such difficulty saying “Merry Christmas” as if it’s offensive? Besides the political correctness rampant in America, is there a deeper issue with people being able to recognize Christmas? Christmas is, and should be, a celebration of Christ coming to earth for the salvation of humanity. The truth that the Son of God left the glories of heaven to become a human baby says at least three things about the human condition and the nature of God.

The mystery of incarnation: A Catholic perspective

Christmas is one of the most important days of the Church year, second only to Easter itself. Celebrating the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, it is the culmination of the mystery of the incarnation, the feast of God becoming flesh (the Latin “in carne” means “enfleshment”). It is a uniquely Christian teaching, the Divine choosing to become one of us. Because of this belief, God is not only Transcendent, but also wholly Immanent, Emmanuel (God-with-us). While remaining Transcendent (meaning we must rise above our present condition to reach Him), He is at the same time Immanent (meaning He is with us as we rise toward Him). Every Eucharist is like Christmas where the bread and wine are transformed into His flesh, His Body and Blood, and, in a sense, He is born anew on the altar.

Who is Jesus?

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

God’s perfect Gift

Merry Christmas to you all! My favorite seasons of the year are Christmas and Easter. At Christmas we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and at Easter we celebrate His resurrection from the dead. It was through His birth in Bethlehem and His death on the cross that we find hope in this life and on into eternity. Christmas isn’t just for children, it’s for all of us, a time to think of the greatest gift ever given, God’s only Son, who left the glories of Heaven to come live among us for a few short years, then to die for us on the cross of Calvary, the greatest gift ever given.
