Cherry Hills Estates and Modern Woodmen of America honored this year’s Hometown Hero, Dick Shamis, at the annual Football Supper and Pep Rally held Thursday, September 7, 2023, at Cherry Hills Estates Assisted Living.

We appreciate your prayers, food and monetary contributions that are given to us from many area businesses, grocery stores, local schools, clubs, churches, civic groups, and many individuals. Your contributions enable us to fill the needs of many in our community.

Clothing Closet The Clothing Closet, located at the First Christian Church, 817 J Street, in Burwell, is open every Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome and all clothing is free.

Incidents/Arrests On 09/03/2023 at 5:04 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop in the 100 block of West Highway 20. A juvenile female was cited for no driver’s license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Valentine – As the summer winds down, the Niobrara National Scenic River is announcing that the visitor center will soon be closed on the weekends to reduce operating hours in the off season. September 23 will be the final day that the visitor center will be open on the weekends in 2023. After that day, the visitor center will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. until Memorial Day 2024.

LINCOLN – Governor Pillen announced his appointment of Senator Tom Briese as state treasurer. Briese will assume the duties of the office on November 1. He will complete the remaining term of John Murante, who will become director of the Nebraska Public Employees Retirement Systems (NPERS).

LINCOLN – Governor Jim Pillen and delegation members concluded their successful trade mission to East Asia. During the 10-day journey to South Korea and Japan, the Nebraska delegation engaged in high-level meetings with government officials, key customers of Nebraska agriculture products, leaders of manufacturing companies and investors into Nebraska’s clean energy sector.

Artists learn in a wide variety of ways, some learn from family members and friends, some take workshops, classes, read books, or view tutorials online, and some may even go to college for art instruction.
