New World Screwworm returns to North America: Implications for Nebraska Livestock Producers

Lincoln, Neb., June 11, 2026 —The New World Screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax, is among the most destructive livestock pests ever encountered in the Western Hemisphere. Unlike most fly species whose larvae develop in decaying organic matter, New World Screwworm larvae feed exclusively on live tissue of warm-blooded animals.

Future preparations

As I reflect on my life and what has brought me the most joy, outside of my family (especially grandkids), I would immediately give credit to two things, music and sewing. Although most older people, male and female, list music where they get enjoyment out of listening to all forms. Fortunately, I was raised in a musical environment as well as a home where handiwork was a way-of-life. We did not have TV when I was a child, but my sisters and I kept entertained by playing music, crafting and sewing. We were in 4-H from an early age as well as were able to receive guidance from skilled needleworkers in our neighborhoods. But what about boys?

Dowden Street to be closed for six weeks

Beginning on Monday, June 15, Dowden Street in Valentine will be closed from Highway 12 to 9th Street for about six weeks for interceptor sewer construction..

Troopers arrest 65 impaired drivers in Make It Click campaign

JUNE 10, 2026, LINCOLN, NE — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol removed 65 impaired drivers from the road during the annual Make It Click campaign surrounding Memorial Day weekend. The effort ran from May 15 through June 1.

During the week of June 7-13, two arrests were reported by the Valentine Police Department: • On June 13, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a 34 year old Nebraska man was arrested and charged with Child Abuse following an investigation that began when an officer was called to speak to an injured child. • At 6:20 p.m., an officer responded to a disturbance in the 200 block of South Cherry Street.

Cherry County Fair theme: Uncle Sam, Apple Pie, and County Fair

The Cherry County Ag Society met Monday, June 8 and voted on a new theme for the 2026 Cherry County Fair. There were four entries from area 4-H youth members. The winning theme is Uncle Sam, Apple Pie, & County Fair by RJ Dean.

Broadening horizons in ag immersion program IFYE

Dr. BaiLee McMillan of Milburn, NE, a recent graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University has been selected to represent Nebraska and the United States in an international agricultural immersion program called IFYE. IFYE programs are facilitated and supported by the IFYE Association of the USA, Inc. These exchanges are conducted in collaboration with State IFYE Associations and State Coordinators. The IFYE Exchange Program was founded after World War II as young Americans perceived the need for greater international understanding and cooperation.
