I was recently contacted by a Nebraska resident who complained about my support for the Convention of States (COS) initiative. They argued the process was illegitimate and dangerous and could lead to a run-away convention wiping out our beloved constitution, etc. Over the years I have devoted a number of these weeklies to this topic, so here goes.

At a time when people’s trust in government is waning, Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers issued an opinion that the Legislature’s Office of the Public Counsel, better known as the Ombudsman’s Office, is unconstitutional.

WashingtOn d.C . As part of the August state work period, I’ve had the pleasure of working back home in Nebraska and traveling the state.

Article III, section 27 of Nebraska’s Constitution says that new legislation ordinarily becomes effective “three calendar months after the adjournment of the session at which it passed.” This year, that date fell on September 2. Among many other new laws that will “go live” at that time is LB 77, my constitutional carry bill.

We’ve known for some time that the state wants to build a new prison because it has the most overcrowded corrections system in the country. It’s a given that state lawmakers agreed to spend at least $350 million on such a facility.
