Cowboys win season opener with 64-14

The Cody-Kilgore Cowboys football team on Friday, August 25, 2023, began their quest for the NSAA Six-Man Championship against the Wallace Wildcats in Wallace. Luckily for the Cowboys, the scoring came early and often.

Girls Golf season began at O’Neill

The VHS Girls Golf team traveled to O’Neill, and shot 467. Individual results are: Kaylee Hanson, 111; JoJo Jordan, 113; Joni Cox, 118; Grace Murphy, 125; Rylee Wackler, 125; Marybelle Ward, 133; Tierney Miller, 153.

Joseph and Schell compete in Senior Championship Bowling Tournament

Rick Joseph and Cindy Schell competed in the 2023 Senior Championships Bowling Tournament in Green Bay, WI August 1-4. Rick and Cindy qualified for the Championship Tournament at the State Senior Tournament held in North Platte. Bowlers from 43 states and four Canadian provinces competed with the top six in each division making the finals.

Final results for the Valentine swim team’s 2023 season

Here are the results from the summer swim meets in which the Valentine athletes competed. Broken Bow, June 24 Brooke Nelson - first place, 25m Freestyle; second place, 50m Backstroke; first place, 25m Breaststroke, second place, 50m Breaststroke; second place, 50m Freestyle.

Benson and Nelson qualify for the state swim meet

Aubrey Benson, and Brook Nelson both qualified for the Nebraska Midwestern long course championship held at Woods Pool in Lincoln, July 27-30, 2023. Aubrey qualified in the 50 meter Freestyle with a time of 33:44.She is the daughter of Jeremy and Becky Benson.

Now is the time to enroll in a hunter education class

Certified volunteer hunter and bowhunter education instructors across Nebraska host classes throughout the year, but late summer and early fall are when most classes are offered. Hunters ages 12 through 29 must take firearm hunter education to hunt any species with a firearm or air gun, and bowhunters age 12-29 must take bowhunter education to hunt deer, antelope, elk or bighorn sheep with a bow or crossbow.

The new school year is almost here! Help your child thrive and enjoy the year safely by following a few tips! Younger students: • Remind young children that markers, crayons, glue, glitter, and other school supplies belong on paper and not in their mouths. Supervise young children while using supplies as they can easily be splashed in the eyes, swallowed, or spilled on the skin.

High water temperatures causing fish die-offs

Nebraska Game and Parks biologists are investigating the extent of a fish die-off along the Platte and Loup rivers near Columbus and downstream, as well as along the Loup Power Canal. Multiple species of dead fish were documented along the waterways July 28, but more are expected to perish as hot and dry conditions persist and water levels decline.

Low water fishing in the heat of summer

Nebraska’s fisheries have their ups and downs, especially if we’re talking water levels. The water stored in many of the state’s most popular fishing lakes is vital for irrigating crops when Mother Nature is stingy with rain.
