Master Gardener: Lawn care and starting seeds indoors

It’s that time of year. Spring cleaning both inside and out. Using a landscape maintenance company offers a viable option to maintaining your landscape on your own. Care should be taken to ensure a reputable company is selected. If you’re a property or homeowner looking for help when caring for the lawn and landscape, you have the option to hire a professional to do the work for you. Consider the following. What are the benefits of hiring a professional company? What is a reasonable price to pay for lawn care? What do service packages offer? What’s required of you? When selecting a reputable company consider schedule flexibility, communication strategies, response times, expertise, comprehensive maintenance plans, and environmental stewardship. If your choice meets all the above, you’re well on your way to a greatlooking place.

Master Gardener: A brief history of greenhouses

Ever wondered how far back greenhouses date? All the way back to 30 A.D. in Rome during the reign of Emperor Tiberius Julius Ceasar Augustus. Just what drove him to have greenhouses built? As the story goes, the ailing Emperor was instructed to eat cucumbers by royal physicians. And so, the first greenhouse was built with stone walls for insulation and a glass ceiling to let the light in.

Vacuum-sealing products can be misleading with their descriptions and images used to advertise these tools. Mason jar vacuum sealers cannot be used to preserve foods that would otherwise be canned and processed using a heat treatment (e.g., boiling water bath, atmospheric steam canning, or pressure canning).

Based on science, built on trust

As we approach the end of our 22nd season, I would like to thank our audience for trusting us to bring them health information that is current and accurate. There are many doctors out there who cannot make the same claims as the Prairie Doc’s and I would like to take this opportunity to help sort out those charlatans and quacks from trusted sources of health information.

Reflecting on progress

It’s human nature to tell stories about the past, and doctors aren’t immune to that impulse. The second year medical students rotating through my clinic have me reflecting on my own years as a fledgling physician, and the changes I’ve seen in my decades of practice.
