Pediatric Influenza Death in NCDHD District

Two pediatric influenza-related deaths have been reported to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). One of the deaths occurred within the North Central District Health Department (NCDHD) service area.

Returning to the Farm workshop for families in transition is March 8, 9 in Kearney

Lincoln, January 3, 2024 — The Center for Agricultural Profitability at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present Returning to the Farm, a workshop series for families who are in the transition process of bringing members back to the farm or ranch. It will begin with a two-day workshop in Kearney for multi-generational families on March 8 and 9 at the office of Nebraska Extension in Buffalo County, 1400 E 34th St.

Registration is open for the annual Healthy Farms Conference

Lincoln, January 2, 2024 — Registration is open for the 2024 Local Food and Healthy Farms Conference, which takes place January 2527 at the River’s Edge Conference Center in Columbus. For over 40 years, the Nebraska Sustainable Ag Society’s (NSAS) annual conference has been a mainstay event for farmers to connect and share knowledge.

Unraveling medical myths

Myths are just stories we tell ourselves and others to make sense of the world around us. Myths convey beliefs or values and attempt to tell truths. In their effort to tell the truth, myths may exaggerate or misrepresent things. Sometimes this misrepresentation is innocent, while other times it is used as a tool to regulate or manipulate people. Myths can be used to give a sense of power and control over an overwhelming situation.

Caring for plants by overwintering indoors

Gardeners are notorious for pushing the limits of their growing zones. Tropical plants, succulents, and other plants that are not hardy to the winter climate often end up indoors for the winter. It usually starts with one or two plants that you just can’t part with or are concerned you won’t be able to purchase next year. Since you are taking a couple of plants in for the winter, why not add a few more?

The Walkling family enjoyed their yearly family getaway to the Black Hills this past weekend. Vern and Marlys were joined by the Matt and Dakota Walkling families, Heidi and Jimmy Doyle and family, and Prairey and Jamie Brennan and family and all enjoyed hiking, fishing, biking, games, a bison auction and great fire conversations!
