Preparing for home food preservation

Many Nebraskans are excited this time of year to begin preparations to preserve the great flavors of the growing season at home. One must follow step-by-step instructions from approved, research tested recipes to assure they preserve a safe home canned product. One such site would be the National Center for Home Food Preservation: https://nchfp.uga.edu.

Master Gardener tips

Or Blooming flowers from spring to fall? Knowing what you want to accomplish can help you take a look at your garden area, allowing you to make plans and help you adjust your goals to fit your space - If you can dream it, you can build it!

Selling food safely – Nebraska Cottage Foods

In 2019, Nebraska amended the Nebraska Pure Food Act which is administered by the Department of Agriculture. Any person may prepare and sell food that is NOT “Time/Temperature Controlled for Safety Food” directly to consumers at a public event (farmers market) or for pick up or delivery without obtaining a food establishment person so long as the food producer complies with the following: 1. The food producer must register with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture online following this training at: https://nda.nebraska. gov/fscp/foods/cottagefood.html 2. Upon registering at this site, food producers must have already completed a food safety course. Nebraska Extension can offer an in-person food safety course, or an online course is offered through the Department of Agriculture website.

Safe and healthy grilling

Grilling is a healthy and low-fat way to cook, but there are rules that need to be followed to stay safe and have a healthy meal for your family. We’ve all experienced that great grilling smell coming from somewhere down the block that makes us wish we were grilling or that we’d been invited to that neighbor’s house for dinner.

Lakeview/Crookston

Jean Burge Memorial Day has come and gone, and to those who went to the work to mow community cemeteries- you are appreciated! The area received several nice rains the past two weeks, and words can’t express just how pretty the country looks. Grass is growing, and hay is being put up.

How are you? Does Midwestern Politeness get in the way?

Midwest Culture is unique. We “America’s Heartlanders” are known for our outdoor hobbies, farming, winter survival strategies, hard work and country living. We are also known for our politeness. It is at times an autopilot response to hold a door open, greet another with a smile, drop off treats for a neighbor or when running into someone familiar ask, “how are you?” How often have we asked, “how are you” and heard the answer, “good” or “fine” or even answered this question ourselves this way.
