Medical school journey

It has been nine years since my medical school acceptance. I can describe my personal process in two words: arduous and lengthy. Now, this may not be the case for all people that apply to medical school. A few individuals may be able to apply directly out of undergrad and be accepted. I’ll speak from my experience which had a few more detours involved.

St. Nicholas Catholic Church host spring meeting of North Platte Deanery

A spirit-filled day was enjoyed by the women of the North Platte Deanery of the Council of Catholic Women recently held in Valentine at St. Nicholas Church. The Deanery installed Loretta Hamilton as Vice President, heard of Pro-Life updates, legislative bills to watch, and community service projects were discussed prior to Mass and meditation. Fellowship and a delicious lunch followed to the enjoyment of all. A fall meeting is planned at North Platte St. Patrick's meeting Hall for September 30 and all women are encouraged to attend. Focus for that meeting will be a baby shower for the North Platte Women's Resource Center which serves pregnant women in the area and runs completely on donations. Back Row: Fr. Sand Painter Artist of the Month

The March Art Show at the Valentine Public Library is a selection of oil paintings by Joan Swim. Capturing the essence of our natural surroundings and simplicity of daily life is the focus of Joan Swim’s artwork. In this fast paced, technologically embedded society Joan opens the viewer’s eyes to the aesthetics of the ordinary. Viewing the straightforward nature of something and working from life in plein air gives vibrancy to what Swim sees as life’s simple beauty. Nature is her studio as she paints weekly in plein air on location. Her hope is that the viewer finds refuge and fascination in the design and eloquence of a humble life.

Create your friendship team

Healthy relationships are the cornerstone of a healthy life. A good friend supports and encourages growth. Youth need guidance in finding good friends. A variety of relationships encourages acceptance of differences, conflict resolution and practicing social skills.

What do you say?

by the late Richard P. Holm, MD Before my junior year in high school, I returned from a Boy Scout canoeing trip to discover my sister had been killed in a car crash. I will never forget the sadness of the moment when I walked into the house that was filled with what seemed like half the caring and wonderful town of De Smet to find my mom and dad there grieving. It was near the end of that summer, but the beginning of a long period of mourning for my family and me.
