Sand Painter Artist of the Month

Rylee Ward is the May Artist of the Month for the Sand Painters Art Club. “I’ve always been drawn to art. I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of life in general. I create art because I use it to express my views and feelings. I create with a variety of mediums, depending solely on what I’m trying to express. My artwork acts as a way for me to express how I’m thinking through more than words.” -Rylee’s Artist Statement. She is a freshman at Valentine High School. Rylee is the daughter of Justin and Ashlee Ward. Her art is on display at Bank of the West, Security First Bank, Viearo, Sandhills Bank, and Union Bank all in Valentine.

It’s always construction season for the body

by Andrew Ellsworth, MD Like a car racing along the interstate, exiting onto a highway, and finally reaching the family farm along a dusty gravel road, our blood circulates inside our bodies. There are the major blood vessels, such as the aorta running out of the heart, and there are the tiny capillaries allowing blood cells one at a time to carry oxygen and nutrients to all the cells in our bodies. The network of capillaries is so complex it is estimated there are over 40 billion in one person, and if stretched out in a single line they would cover over 100,000 miles.

Protecting your skin from pests

Spring is finally here in the Northern Plains and summer feels just around the corner. As all we Northerners know, as soon as the temperatures hit even a mild degree on the thermometer most of us shed the jackets and long pants, and our skin is front-and-center.

Here’s some information to help you decide what to plant and when. If soil temps are in the 40-degree Fahrenheit range, you can safely plant such things as arugula, kale, lettuce, parsnips, peas, radishes, and spinach seeds. Stay tuned for more soil temp info this week.
