Holiday help from the poison center

Season’s greetings from the Nebraska Poison Center! A friendly reminder that the holidays bring changes in routine and increase the risk of accidental exposure to poisons in the home. The Nebraska Poison Center would like to offer a few helpful holiday hints:

Holiday creations from indoor and garden plants

Don’t let winter stop you from bringing a bit of the outdoors inside. Take a break from the holiday rush for a bit of gardening and crafting relief. Grab a pruner and basket then wander through your landscape gathering a few evergreen branches, berry-laden stems, and cones to create a holiday centerpiece or décor.

Lead testing, remediation grants available for schools, licensed child care programs

Lincoln-The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) Lead Testing and Reduction Grant Program has grant funds available for public and private schools, local educational agencies, and licensed child care programs across the state to remediate lead in drinking water and reduce children’s exposure.

Plastic surgery: Transforming lives inside and out

When many people hear the term plastic surgery images of Hollywood stars trying to fight back the effects of aging come to mind. It is easy to assume that plastic surgeons just deal in vanity. However, that would minimize everything that these talented surgeons accomplish with their scalpels. The term “Plastic Surgery” comes from the Greek term “Plastikos” meaning “to shape or form.”

Protect yourself and loved ones against influenza

Lincoln-According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, influenza activity often begins to increase in October and peaks between December and February. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services emphasizes the importance of taking preventative steps to keep Nebraskan families and communities healthy.

Gov. Pillen proclaims Tobacco Cessation Awareness Week

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and disease. On November 1, 2024, Governor Pillen signed a proclamation recognizing Tobacco Cessation Awareness Week from November 17 to 23, 2024 focusing attention and resources across the state to support Nebraskans on their journey to becoming tobacco-free. In 2023, 12.1% of Nebraska adults and 2.2% of Nebraska youth smoked cigarettes. Today, nearly seven out of 10 adults who smoke report they want to quit.
