Pregnancy help centers ensure that no woman is left alone in her own hour of need

Washington - Across the United States, approximately 2,750 pregnancy help centers offer lifeaffirming support to pregnant and parenting women in need. In recognition of their contribution to the common good, and in observance of Pregnancy Help Appreciation Week, November 11-15, Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of Arlington, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued the following statement: “During Pregnancy Help Appreciation Week, we celebrate the thousands of pregnancy care centers providing life-saving help to the most vulnerable group in our society: pregnant women in need. As Advent approaches, we remember the Blessed Virgin Mary who in her hour of need found no room at the inn.

NFPA urges extra caution when preparing your feast this Thanksgiving

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) urges added caution when cooking on Thanksgiving Day, by far the leading day of the year for home cooking fires. In 2022, an estimated 1,610 home cooking fires were reported to U.S fire departments on Thanksgiving Day, reflecting a 399 percent increase over the daily average. Between 2018 and 2022, there was an annual average of three and half times more cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day than on a typical day of the year.

Protecting children from online harms

Children’s access to the internet has become nearly ubiquitous, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic. Remote learning, online gaming, and social media are now integral to daily life, meaning more children, even preschool-age children, are regularly online, often unsupervised and unprotected. This new reality demands that we consider not only physical safety for our children, but also the dangers they are facing online.
