Celebrate Halloween safely

Halloween is an exciting holiday for children, and the staff at the Poison Center would like to remind parents and care givers to take some simple precautions to make sure that everyone has a safe and happy Halloween. Here are a few tips about these tricks!

NFPA urges public to keep fire safety in mind for Halloween

With Halloween upon us, fire safety hazards lurk among many of the holiday’s festivities and celebrations. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), between 2018 and 2022, an annual average of 835 home structure fires began with decorations, resulting in three deaths, 30 injuries, and $14 million in direct property damage. Nearly half (47 percent) of these fires occurred because the decorations were too close to a heat source; approximately one-third (32 percent) started with candles.

Multi-state outbreak of E. coli includes Nine Cases in Nebraska

Lincoln, NE – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported an outbreak of 49 cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in 10 states. Currently, nine cases have been identified in the following Nebraska public health regions: Lincoln-Lancaster County, Douglas County, and Sarpy- Cass. Initial investigations have potentially linked the outbreak to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders.

HPV causes caner, and can be prevented

What do warts, pap smears, cervical cancer, head and neck cancer, and a vaccine all have in common? Three letters: HPV Human papillomavirus ( HPV) is a common virus that can cause growths on skin and mucous membranes. There are over one hundred different types of HPV, and while some cause common warts, others can cause cancer.

Apples galore!

Apples have been freshly picked and are readily available in local grocery stores which are a favorite in autumn. They are a great source of fiber and vitamin C, plus they taste great. Johnny Appleseed is best known across the United States for introducing apples to North America in the early 1800s. However, apples were actually introduced earlier in the 17th Century by colonists. Since then, apples have become a favorite to many Americans.

Duane and Janet Cady have a new great granddaughter! Sawyer Monroe Maser was born October 17 to AJ and Britni Maser of Alliance. Sheryl Noteboom visited her daughter, Mindi and Jason Veurink and family at Platte last week.

The saying goes, “newer isn’t always better,” and while I typically tend to agree with that, newer might be better when it comes to glucose monitoring technology. In recent years we have seen rapid development and uptake of new types of glucometers, leaving fewer and fewer patients with diabetes using the old standby fingerstick method of blood sugar monitoring.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Lincoln-Women have a one in eight chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). On average, 310,720 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the United States; approximately 1,770 of those are Nebraska women.
