Northeastern Nebraska state parks see many enhancements

Visitors to state park areas in northeastern Nebraska will find enhanced day-use and camping amenities. Projects in the works or completed will appeal to an array of park users. The following is a roundup of those improvements and projects:

Women can learn, advance their fishing skills at BOW events

Women looking to learn fishing skills or expand what they already know are invited to events hosted by the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program in April. The free offerings are: • Introduction to Fishing – April 16 at Platte River State Park, April 23 at Conestoga State Recreation Area, April 24 at Olive Creek SRA.

Eight reasons to sign up for Crofton’s Dam Race

Registration just opened for Nebraska’s most scenic triathlon – Crofton’s Dam Race – set for July 26, 2025 at Lewis and Clark State Now in its eighth year, the race continues to blend small town charm and new traditions, all while benefiting the development of a walk-bike trail at the recreation area just north of Crofton.

Valentine West 4th Street/US-83 update

Preparations are underway to resume work on the West 4th Street Project in Valentine. Work on this project includes reconstructing US-83, which requires removing and replacing the existing concrete pavement.

The project also includes improvements to sidewalks, storm sewer, roadway lighting and repairs to the bridge over Minnechaduza Creek. The City of Valentine plans to update city owned utilities along US-83/4th Street concurrently with this project.

Security First Bank collects 6,477 items in annual Feeding Hearts food drive

Valentine, NE (March 25, 2025)– Security First Bank and Security First Insurance, with the generous support of its customers and employees, successfully collected more than 6,477 items of food and personal care items and raised over $16,700 in monetary donations during its sixth annual Feeding Hearts food drive.

Cherry County Convention Center Open House, April 15 at Mid Plains

An Open House will be held Tuesday, April 15, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., hosted by Cherry County Tourism and Mid Plains Community College on the new Cherry County Convention Center. Members of the Cherry County Tourism Board, Anne Clark, Sara Ferguson and Kim Epke shared that they decided to reach out to Mid Plains Community College who was “gung ho” and “excited” to partner with them.

Dads Lake fire ignites at Valentine National Wildlife Refuge

Valentine, NE, March 28 – Local and federal fire officials have responded to and are suppressing an active and growing wildfire at Valentine National Wildlife Refuge in Cherry County, Nebraska. The Dads Lake Fire was reported shortly after noon on Friday, March 28, 2025. Responding fire officials do not have an estimated size or percent contained available tonight. The cause is under investigation.
