Finally, finally, our Sandhills has been blessed with rain! My weatherman hubby recorded 4.69” down here on the river south of Cody for the month of May – half an inch above normal! The rain held off, for the most part, for the majority of the Circle C activities on Saturday the 24th. Many thanks to the Circle C Committee, who put in countless hours planning and organizing the day.

Chief Bryan Waugh to lead Nebraska State Patrol

LINCOLN, NE – Governor Jim Pillen announced his appointment of Chief Bryan Waugh as the next superintendent for the Nebraska State Patrol. He will assume his duties on June 2. Waugh replaces Colonel John Bolduc, who is retired May 4.

During the week of May 25 - 31, the following arrests were made by the Valentine Police Department: • On May 30 at approximately 2:00 a.m., a traffic stop near the intersection of 3rd and Cherry Streets lead to the arrest of a 21 year old South Dakota woman on the charge of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol. • On May 30, at approximately 6:00 p.m., an officer observed a vehicle speeding on 5th Street.

How to get kids more engaged in their dental health

Dental health should be a priority at any age, and is especially important for children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than half of children between the ages of six and eight have had a cavity in at least one of their primary teeth. Also, more than half of adolescents aged 12 to 19 have had a cavity in at least one permanent tooth. Cavities and other oral health conditions, such as periodontal diseases, are largely preventable with proper oral hygiene.

2025 inductees of the Nebraska Sandhills Cowboy Hall of Fame, June 7

The 20th Annual Nebraska Sandhills Cowboy Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony will be held June 7, 2025 at the 4-H Building at the Cherry County Fairgrounds in Valentine, NE. Social Hour will begin at 4:00 p.m., Benefit Auction will take place at 5:00 p.m., Banquet at 6:00 p.m.

Valentine Public Library receives $4,000 from Sandhills Area Foundation’s Wilson-Taylor endowment

Valentine, NE – [May 22, 2025] – The Sandhills Area Foundation recently distributed $4,000 to the Valentine Public Library Foundation from the Wilson-Taylor endowment. The Wilson-Taylor endowment, administered through the Sandhills Area Foundation, wasestablishedtofundeducational andcommunity-basedprogramsin the area, with monies periodically going directly to the Valentine Public Library and the Sandhills Area Foundation scholarship fund. Dividends from this endowment fluctuate based on market performance and are disbursed to benefit the local library and community scholars.
