Cheryl Lynn Bennett, age 68, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at her home in Valentine, NE, in the loving presence of her husband, Rick Bennett.
Cheryl was born on July 22, 1957, in Valentine, NE, to Norma Porath. She was raised and loved by her parents Norma and Wayne Porath.
Cheryl found the love of her life, Rick Bennett, when they were just 17 years old, solidifying their union on the 22nd of September in 1977, beginning a marriage that lasted 48 years.
Together they were blessed with two children, Jared and Jennifer, and later five grandchildren who brought Cheryl immense joy and meaning.
Family was the center of Cheryl’s whole life, often keeping her faith close and traditions alive. Cheryl’s upbringing and light for life shone through in the way she raised her children and cherished every minute with her grandchildren. Cheryl was always ready with a hug, smile, and words of wisdom. Her happy place was often being surrounded by her beautiful grandchildren, sharing ice cream, popsicles, and homemade treats.
Cheryl held many positions throughout her life, including working at Cherry Hills Estates, Cherry County Clinic, Valentine School District, and First National Bank. All who worked with Cheryl, and all who crossed her path, could attest to her warm smile, attentive listening, and genuine kindness.
Cheryl found peace in nature. She loved to walk her dog, Sky, and a favorite pastime was caring for the birds with her grandchildren, teaching them about the gentle nature and unique facts of each one.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Rick Bennett of Valentine; son, Jared Bennett (Natalie) of Brule NE; daughter, Jennifer Johnson (Colton) of Burke SD; sister, Deb O’Connor (John) of Ashland NE; brother, Brent Porath (Julie) of Valentine NE; sister, Twila Reding (Ronnie) of Blunt SD; and her grandchildren, Legend, Bayia, Lawson, Ronan, and Locklynn— along with several nieces and nephews, all of whom brought her immeasurable joy.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Norma Porath; her father, Wayne Porath; and her biological father, Dennis Larson.
Cheryl’s gentle spirit, kindness, and unwavering love for her family will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Funeral service for Cheryl Bennett, age 68 of Valentine, was held Friday, January 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at the Valentine Methodist Church. The burial followed at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. A visitation was held on Thursday, January 15 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines.
Sandoz Chapel of the Pines was entrusted with service arrangements.
