Dr. William “Bill” D. Murphy, a beloved educator, scholar, athlete, and devoted community servant, passed away at the age of 89 on June 13, 2025, in Lincoln, NE. Born 1935, in Valentine, NE, to William “Pat” and Teresa (Mahoney) Murphy. Bill lived a life of passion, dedication, and achievement.

Bil l exce l l e d both academically and athletically from a young age. He was crowned homecoming king in 1952 and graduated from Valentine High School in 1953, earning honors for his outstanding performances in track meets. His commitment to education led him to Chadron State Teacher’s College, where he graduated in 1957. He later earned a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska in 1965 and a PhD from Indiana University in 1975.

Bill served in the U.S. Army before embarking on a lifelong career in education. He taught and coached in Greeley and Valentine, NE before becoming a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from the early 1960s to the early 2000s, shaping the minds of countless students and leaving a lasting impact in academia. During his tenure, he also served as the advisor to the Husker Yell Squad from 1966 to 1980, demonstrating his enthusiasm for student involvement and school spirit.

Beyond his academic and athletic achievements, Bill was committed to service and giving back. He was a dedicated volunteer with St. Vincent DePaul, offering his time and efforts to support those in need. His warmth, intelligence, and kindness touched the lives of many, whether through his teaching, his time on the track, or his service to the community. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Bill was also a Husker fan and an avid outdoorsman, attending Husker football games and taking hunting trips well into his 80s. Dr. Murphy was preceded in death by his parents; brother John Murphy; sister Margaret Murphy; brothers-in-law Joe Donovan and Glen Larsen. He is survived by sisters, Nelda Donovan of Valentine, NE, and Mary Larsen of Hastings, NE; brother, Jim Murphy, and wife Sherry of Lincoln, NE; sister-in-law Caryl Murphy of Medford, OR and 17 nieces and nephews, along with their families, all of whom adored their Uncle Bill. His impact as a mentor, role model, and loving family member was deeply felt by each of them.

A rosary was held on Monday, June 23, at 6:30 p.m. at Butherus, Maser, and Love Funeral Home. Funeral services took place on Tuesday, June 24, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lincoln, NE, where Bill was a longtime parishioner.

Bill Murphy’s life was one of purpose, excellence, and inspiration. He will be deeply missed, but his influence and achievements will never be forgotten.
