Norma Jean (McCabe) New, 84

Norma Jean (McCabe) New, 84, of Winner, SD passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Facility in Winner, SD. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at 2:00 p.m., at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, SD. Burial followed in the Winner City Cemetery. A visitation was held one hour prior to funeral service.

Norma Jean was born on May 31, 1941 to Rose (Nagel) and Norbert McCabe. She was the middle of three daughters and was raised on a farm seven miles south of Winner. Norma Jean attended Rosehill country school through eighth grade and graduated from Winner High School in 1959. Norma Jean married Duane New of Carter, SD and to this union, one daughter, Kathy, was born.

Norma Jean enjoyed and excelled in bookkeeping. Her attention to detail, keen eye for accuracy and a strong work ethic were all key to her successful career. Following graduation, she worked four years as the Tripp County Deputy Treasurer before accepting a banking role in Valentine NE. In the fall of 1969, Norma Jean moved to Oregon for an accounting position with the City of Forest Grove. In 1976 she returned to the Midwest and started her 29-year career with the City of Valentine, NE. During her tenure, Norma Jean wore many hats including City Clerk/ Treasurer, Administrative Assistant and City Manager. Norma Jean was a stable presence at City Hall and worked diligently to serve the Valentine, NE community. Following her retirement, Norma Jean moved to Winner, SD to be closer to family.

Norma Jean devoted countless hours to her passions – gardening, embroidering, sewing, quilting, and painting. Oftentimes you could find her in the hot sun tending to her flowers, vegetable garden and her lawn which were all pristine and beautiful. Norma Jean was a skilled seamstress making clothes, aprons, potholders and many other items. She designed and created many intricate quilts, embroidered dish towels, and hand painted exquisite holiday and craft projects for family and friends.

She enjoyed camping, boating, canning her home-grown vegetables, and listening to her nostalgic albums on her turntable. Norma Jean loved her family, spending time outdoors, and attending extended family gatherings. Throughout the years, Norma Jean cared for several pets that she adored.

For the past nine years, Norma Jean called Elder Inn in Winner, SD home with caring staff and wonderful residents. Norma Jean spent time watching people, putting together puzzles, listening to music, attending church, participating in events, and seeing visitors. We were blessed to have her happy and comforted during her final years.

Norma Jean is survived by daughter Kathy Hand Chramosta and husband Bill; grandchildren, Travis (Ali) Hand, Taylor (Cody) Harms, Traven Hand, and their families; sister, Helen Turnquist; nieces and nephews, Heth (Rachelle) Turnquist, Natalie (Andy) Damgaard, Ryan (Tiffany) Turnquist, Cindi (Paul) Colvin, Steve Brown, Sandy (John) DeMers, Linda (Phil) Husher, Misty Brown and Tracey (Chris) Pelchat and their families; and special friends Brad and Deb Hand.

She is preceded in death by parents Rose and Norbert McCabe, sister Delores Brown, and brotherin- law’s Wayne Brown and Roger Turnquist.
