There was speculation on Facebook about the United States being a better place to live in the past.” Some say yes and some say that they would miss the modern conveniences of now.
Without injecting myself much into this debate, I will lay out some reasons why that speculation could be so and why it likely isn’t. Starting when I was a kid; I feel sorry for kids who were raised in town. I had a half Shetland pony, not much smaller than a small saddle horse, my sister also had one. Dad was pretty hard up and I don’t suppose he could have afforded them, but we had them and rode them hard, always on the run and usually bareback. Of course, we also helped dad with cattle work.
That was quite a few years ago. I liked that time all right. Were some things missing in my life? I suppose there were if I had known about it. I didn’t know there was such a thing as television. Along with play time I also had work to do. Starting at age 10 or younger I raked scatterings behind a power sweep with a miss-matched team of horses seated on a 12-foot dump rake. I helped milk cows by hand twice a day.
On thinking back, it seems there were times I had plenty to do but I don’t remember not wanting to do it. So I think life was just okay in that period of time. Someone mentioned air conditioning but you don’t miss what you don’t know about, the same with running water in the house and indoor toilets. So, as far as I know that period of life, in my young mind, was all right.
Talking about now. We have luxuries we didn’t dare dream about back then, good automobiles and most of us can drive on much better roads. Much better heating and cooling systems for our houses. Living is much easier.
Now, getting on to what could be undesirable of nowadays. We have lawmakers whose only interest in the folks who voted them into office is staying in office. Many of them don’t represent their constituents at all but are more interested in making money, often selling their vote to lobbyists.
