Guided foraging hike at Fort Falls Trail

Valentine, NE – Visitors to Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge are invited to join National Park Service rangers and an American Conservation Corps intern on a new guided foraging program which explores the edible, medicinal, and culturally significant plants that thrive along the Fort Falls Trail, Saturday, September 6, 2025. The program will be offered at 10:00 a.m. and again at 2:00 p.m., CST.

The science of a sit spot

We’re busy, and there’s no slowing down. We scroll our phones and get lost in apps. We spend hours of the day working to support ourselves or care for others, and when we’re home, there is always more to do. There’s an “extinction of experience” happening around us, and if we’re not careful, we might sleep right through it.

Hunters urged to be cautious of potential fire hazards

It takes just one spark to ignite a wildfire. With several harvest seasons opening September 1, including dove, grouse and archery deer, hunters are reminded to act responsibly in the field and to do their part to prevent wildfires.

Sandhills Piecemakers Quilt Guild to host programs

Sandhills Piecemakers Quilt Guild meeting on September 22, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church at 209 N. Green Street, Valentine, NE. Program will be Dr. Steven Senseney speaking about his painted quilt process. Individuals interested in this program are welcome to attend.

Marital conflicts while driving

Navigating while driving can oftentimes be a source of conflict in marriage relationships, often sparking heated arguments which are called “carguments.” In my opinion, the greatest advancement in relieving the stress of driving conflicts is the GPS tracker, found on smart phones and on many newer model vehicles. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, and lets us know where we are and where we are going anywhere on earth.

Allo completes new fiber edge-outs

Allo recently completed laying fiber to Meadow Lake and Chaduza Acres, which they call “edge-outs,” located west and east of Valentine. This will provide 109 previously underserved addresses, pictured at right.
