Rain, rain, blessed rain!! Nothing towritehomeabout,butenough to get a little start on the hills. We received .67” down here on the river south of town. Many are turning their cattle out “to grass” but still needing to add hay to protect our fragile Sandhills. Prayers continue for rains on the blowing sands of southwest Nebraska.

Spirits are a little brighter after the beautiful rain received on Sunday. Valentine reported .64 and as I write this more is predicted. Pastures were in great need of this, and we will keep the faith and pray for timely rains all summer. It was great to drive back from church Sunday with the windshield wipers going (and not just on intermittent) and see rain standing on the road!

Pertussis: Importance of Prevention and Early Treatment

Lincoln, NE – In 2025, a total of 367 cases of pertussis were reported to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious bacterial respiratory illness that spreads easily from person to person through coughing or sneezing.

Hail Happens!

Hail damage in the landscape is difficult to prevent. Once it occurs, it’s important to access both shortand long-term implications. After the storm is over: Remove badly damaged plants from the vegetable garden. Consider replanting with short-season cultivars if sufficient time in the growing season remains.

Police BLOTTER

During the week of May 10th to May 16th, the following arrests were reported by the Valentine Police Department: On May 14th, at 10;30 AM, a traffic stop near the intersection of Highway 83 and Main Street lead to the arrest of a 35 year old South Dakota woman on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance (methamphetamine), Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Trooper Kyle McAcy added to National Law Enforcement Memorial

MAY 15, 2026 (WASHINGTON, D.C.) — Trooper Kyle McAcy #302 has officially been added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. Trooper McAcy was killed in the line of duty on February 17, 2025.

Road work to begin on US-83 south of Valentine

May 11, 2026, Ainsworth, NE — Weather permitting, work will begin May 18, on U.S. Highway 83 (US-83), from reference post 188+00 to reference post 193+00, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Valentine Chamber of Commerce to meet about seeking a candidate for the director position

The Valentine Chamber of Commerce has a director position available, after the termination of Bruce Anderson, who filled the vacancy left behind when Jenny Moore resigned earlier this year. Chamber of Commerce President Matt Benzing confirmed that Anderson was terminated, and that in an upcoming meeting he and the board members will discuss hiring a new director.
