Building permits in 2024 add nearly $7 million to valuation of Valentine, and Cherry County

More than 30 building permits were issued for Cherry County in 2024, totaling more than $3.5 million. Ten were for new residences in the amount of $2,080,000; nine facility upgrades in the amount of $150,000; one remodel with amount not available; two additions in the amount of $85,000; a new cabin, $200,000; a new fishing cabin, $193,000; farm employee housing, $204,000; two replace existing home, $516,000; and five co-locate on cell tower, $250,000. The total is $3,678,000, and amounts to 26,025 square feet of new living space, which didn’t include the two replacement of homes.

Dispatch discussed at Keya Paha Commissioners meeting

On the Keya Paha County Commissioners agenda for their January 14 meeting was Discussion/ Action Dispatch Equipment, which led to an update regarding the transfer of dispatching services to Cherry County. With the recent retirement announcement of Keya Paha dispatcher Barb Nilson, it was asked where that equipment would go.

Wilcox is the winner of the 2025 Vets Club Soup contest!

The 2025 Vets Club Soup contest had a record crowd in our new back room! Winning with her potato soup was Stacy Wilcox, she received $100 from Henderson’s IGA. Taking second place was Donald McCleary’s yum yum soup, he received $50 from Scotty’s Ranchland Foods. Suzanne Schultz made chicken tortilla for third place. Rounding out the contest was Lisa Michalek’s Italian sausage tortellini and Mari Smith’s chicken gnocchi! Thank you everyone for a great year!

During the week of January 26 to February 1, the following arrests were made: On January 29, a traffic stop conducted at approximately 5:00 p.m., lead the arrest of a 64 year old Nebraska man for the offense of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.

Seniors over 50, schedule help with your taxes

The Valentine Public Library has partnered wit an AARP Tax-Aide to provide in-person assistance to anyone, free of charge, with a focus on taxpayers who are over 50 and have low to moderate income. This year, an AARP Tax-Aide volunteer will be at the Valentine Public Library from February 3, 2025, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
