The Salvation Army

When the weather dips below freezing in Valentine, most of the city’s residents do their best to stay indoors as much as possible. However, during the last several years, local community members and organizations have volunteered to stand outside, braving biting winds and bone-chilling temperatures to ring bells asking for donations. Since the Salvation Army first began collecting donations in their signature red kettles in the late 1800s, the organization has relied on volunteers to do the bulk of its bell ringing.

Don’t let scammers trick you into revealing your private information!

It was a horrible day for me, and I want to share with as many as I can. I came close to losing $10,000 in a highly sophisticated scam and want to warn others. Once again, knowing God’s protection. I tried to call Microsoft regarding my bill. After a half hour of getting nowhere trying to talk to a person, I Googled for a direct line for customer service, and a number came up that I called. Looking back, this should have been a clue that this was a scam because I immediately got to talk to someone, and this never happens.

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor, Many thanks to the “group of local citizens” who have committed to purchasing the Valentine Midland News! As a Valentine native and frequent visitor over the many years since I moved away after graduating from VHS, I have really enjoyed being able to keep informed about local goings-on, thanks to the Midland News. On the day the newspaper’s demise was announced on the front page, I counted half a dozen acquaintances in photos published the same day! And the annual high school reunion photos are a real treat, as they allow one to see people one to three years younger and one to three years older—those who were in VHS at the same time but who are never at the same reunions! “Valentine Midland News to continue publishing” was a super day-brightener! Regards, Mary Ann May-Pumphrey San José, CA.
