Nebraska Children and Families Foundation and Nebraska Department of Education celebrated Grade-Level Reading Week

(Lincoln)—Nebraska Children and Families Foundation and the Nebraska Department of Education are the state co-leads in support of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and Nebraska's efforts to improve childhood literacy. From July 22 - 26, we celebrated Grade-Level Reading Week to spotlight literacy gaps and encourage participation in virtual events that highlight different aspects of our efforts.

24th annual Sandhills Open Road Challenge, August 8-10

On August 7, more than 140 high performance cars will converge on Arnold, for the 24th annual Sandhills Open Road Challenge. The event will begin on Thursday, August 8 with the 22-mile Loup 2 Loup Open Road Race between Halsey and Purdum.

Imagine being a furry creature in Nebraska during the peak of summer — it’s like wearing a winter coat in a sauna! While we humans crank up the AC, sip iced tea and lounge in front of fans, wildlife must get creative to beat the heat. Picture a prairie dog retreating to its underground burrow or a jackrabbit flashing its oversized ears like a pair of built-in fans. From playing hide-and-seek with the sun to inventing their own versions of natural air conditioning, animals have some quirky ways to stay cool.

How to prevent hot car emergencies

Parents often do everything within their means to keep their children safe in and outside of their homes. Throughout the years, child safety seats have helped reduce the risk of serious injuries to children while riding in vehicles. However, incidents of hot car injuries and deaths have increased.
