While Nebraskans can expect to see many boaters on the lakes this Memorial Day weekend, they also can expect to find Nebraska Game and Parks staff inspecting boats for invasive zebra mussels. Zebra mussels are a small, Dshaped clam with alternating light and dark bands across the shell.

The Valentine Fire Department responded to a call Monday, May 13, 2024 at Crossroads Assembly of God Church at 8:40 p.m. There were 26 firefighters on scene. The cause of the fire was due to burning weeds in a flowerbed. After 1.5 hours, they headed back to the fire hall. There was minor damage to the structure.

Wood Lake American Legion Post 202 is hosting a Memorial Day program, Sunday, May 26, at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Wood Lake.

Valentine Police Chief Dana Miller confirmed that on May 8, 2024, at 9:30 a.m., a 911 call was received stating that “a man with a gun,' had pointed the gun at them and their house.” In response to this call the Valentine Police Department and the Cherry County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence in the 200 block of south Helen Street.

Each year, the Leo Brinda Unit #90 American Legion Auxiliary hosts a poppy poster contest for local students in grades 2-12. First through third places in each age group are selected by local Veterans and the public had a chance to vote in the 'People's Choice Awards' on April 27, as part of 1884 Days festivities.
