The Valentine City Council met for their regular meeting, Thursday, August 8, 2024, in the City Library Meeting Room. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. with the following in attendance: City Clerk Deanna Schmit, City Manager Shane Siewert; Council members Ross Brockley, Brad Arnold, Neil Wescott, Kalli Kieborz, and Kyle Arganbright.

Chadron – Current Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee for 2024, has chosen Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Chadron State College graduate, as her vice presidential running mate.

The Long Pine Creek Bridge on highway US-20 at mile marker 250.11 is scheduled to open this afternoon, Friday, August 9. Motorists should not attempt to cross the bridge until the road closed signs and barricades have been removed.

ATLANTA – A team of Northeast Community College students took top honors at a national career and technical education skills competition and leadership conference. A total of 26 students, faculty, and staff went to Atlanta, GA, for the competition with 17 Northeast students competing after winning gold medals at the state competition in Grand Island.

Juniors, 13-7 overall - Andy Hoban Memorial Champs C-7 Area Runner-Up to Ord. Only losses to class C teams were to Ord and Pender who qualified for state tournament.

The Valentine Methodist Church will host their annual Ice Cream Social, Wednesday, August 21 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There will be sloppy joes and chips in addition to the homemade ice cream and pies.

Lincoln – As the summer break from school draws to a close, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recognizes the return to the classroom can be exciting, overwhelming, and stressful. Whether it is the first day of kindergarten, sophomore year of college, or post graduate school, it is normal to experience academic, mental, and social challenges.

Congratulations to Katelynn Patton and David Williams, who were married August 10 in Mitchell. Katelynn is the daughter of Ron and Becky Patton. Heather Deeter flew in from Alaska, and was joined by the other siblings - Allan Patton, Laura and Alex Bad Bear and Brady and Cynthia Cope and daughter Stella.

True food allergic reactions cause anaphylaxis. Eating even a tiny bit of the allergenic food causes the patient to quickly develop symptoms that can include shortness of breath, hives, vomiting, diarrhea, throat swelling, passing out, and at times it can be fatal. The patient makes IgE allergy antibody to the food. The cause of the reactions can be determined by the history and confirmed by allergy skin or blood testing.
