Mountain lion no longer a threat to locals

The Valentine Police Department had been monitoring the whereabouts of a mountain lion for the past couple weeks, and confirmed a second sighting within the Valentine city limits via video evidence early last week.

Gov. Pillen concludes successful trade mission to South Korea and Japan

LINCOLN – Governor Jim Pillen and delegation members concluded their successful trade mission to East Asia. During the 10-day journey to South Korea and Japan, the Nebraska delegation engaged in high-level meetings with government officials, key customers of Nebraska agriculture products, leaders of manufacturing companies and investors into Nebraska’s clean energy sector.

Governor appoints Briese as State Treasurer

LINCOLN – Governor Pillen announced his appointment of Senator Tom Briese as state treasurer. Briese will assume the duties of the office on November 1. He will complete the remaining term of John Murante, who will become director of the Nebraska Public Employees Retirement Systems (NPERS).

Fall and winter hours at the Niobrara National Scenic River Visitor Center

Valentine – As the summer winds down, the Niobrara National Scenic River is announcing that the visitor center will soon be closed on the weekends to reduce operating hours in the off season. September 23 will be the final day that the visitor center will be open on the weekends in 2023. After that day, the visitor center will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. until Memorial Day 2024.

VPD reported offenses, citations, and arrests, September 3-9

Incidents/Arrests On 09/03/2023 at 5:04 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop in the 100 block of West Highway 20. A juvenile female was cited for no driver’s license and possession of drug paraphernalia.
