Clothing Closet The Clothing Closet, located at the First Christian Church, 817 J Street, in Burwell, is open every Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome and all clothing is free.

With the Dog Days of Summer fading in our rearview, we cannot express enough how touched we are at the generosity of each of you who helps keep our little pantry up and running with your much needed donations. We appreciate your prayers, food and monetary contributions that are given to us from many area businesses, grocery stores, local schools, clubs, churches, civic groups, and many individuals. Your contributions enable us to fill the needs of many in our community.

Shamis named Hometown Hero

Cherry Hills Estates and Modern Woodmen of America honored this year’s Hometown Hero, Dick Shamis, at the annual Football Supper and Pep Rally held Thursday, September 7, 2023, at Cherry Hills Estates Assisted Living.

Chaduza Cook-off for the win!

Wonderful smells wafted up from the Valentine City Park,Saturday, September 9, 2023, as grillmasters began their craft of BBQ for the win! There were three categories along with sides for the public to come and taste.

Flag pole restoration service project done with new Cub Scout charter with VFW Post 5138

The VFW Post 5138 is the new charter of the Cub Scouts Pack 288 and it was great to be able to get the two together doing good in the community. A service project was recently done together repairing a flag pole in town and raising a new flag. The Cub Scouts were also taught flag etiquette. Appreciation goes to Don and Virginia Nelsen for donating the flag, halyard, paint and hooks. Appreciation also to the Valentine Fire Department for the use of their ladder.

In 1930, President Hoover signed the Plant Patent Act into law. For a plant to be patentable, it must be cultivated and capable of asexual propagation. Some plants are sold with labels that include a patent number or a phrase such as “Propagation Prohibited” or “Plant Patent Applied For (PPAF).” The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) grants plant patents for a nonrenewable period of 20 years starting from the date an inventor files the patent application.

Fall and winter hours at the Niobrara National Scenic River Visitor Center

Valentine-As the summer winds down, the Niobrara National Scenic River is announcing that the visitor center will soon be closed on the weekends to reduce operating hours in the off season. September 23 will be the final day that the visitor center will be open on the weekends in 2023. After that day, the visitor center will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. until Memorial Day 2024.
